Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal (PBM) is an autonomous body set up through a 1991 Act of the Government of Pakistan. PBM is not a public treasury in the sense that it exists to help the poor and not run the government. PBM significantly contributes to poverty alleviation through its various projects, including providing assistance to the destitute, widows, orphans, invalids, and other needy persons.〔(www.pbm.gov.pk/Introduction_Links.html )〕 The main objectives of the PBM is to provide financial assistance to the destitute, widows, orphans, invalids, infirm and other needy persons with emphasis on rehabilitation. PBM is assisting the poor in a variety of areas under the government patronage.〔(www.yfp.org.pk/Bait%20Ul%20Maal.htm )〕 Providing: *Educational assistance to needy orphan and stipends for the outstanding, non-affording students for higher professional education *Residential accommodation and necessary facilities for the deserving *Free medical treatment for indigent sick people, set up free hospitals and rehabilitation centres for the poor *Financial aid to charitable institutions including educational & vocational setups. *Sponsor and promote self-employment schemes. Pakistan Bait-ulmal is the sponsor of Benazir Income Support Programme.
